Worship - Music

Augustine said that "When you sing to God you are praying twice"

- and music plays a vital part in the life of our church.

The music at Hinckley URC is a blend of traditional and contemporary.  For Sunday worship we are led by a combination of organ, choir and an acoustic worship band.  The worship band tends to play the more contemporary worship songs.

The church has a fine historic pipe organ, which is put to good use for traditional hymns and organ voluntaries.  The organ was restored in 2007 and is used for recitals as well as being available to organists for practice purposes.  The organ was designed by H.J. Gauntlett and was built by G.M. Holdich - for more information  about the organ please see Link to National Pipe Organ Register

We have a small choir which occasionally sings during worship, particularly for 'special' Sundays. Our choral music is a mix of old and new, seeking to maintain four-part harmony singing where possible including music sourced from the World Church. We meet to practice every Thursday evening from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. We are always keen to welcome new recruits - no audition necessary!  Our choir also takes part in Free Church Choirs events nationally and regionally - see  for more information.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Service starting at 10:45am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team at the door.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There are disabled toilets in the main foyer.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10:45am with a warm welcome from one of our team members, however we encourage people to spend time before this in prayer, either silently or sometimes a person might pray out loud or read a small passage from the bible whilst music plays.   We have a number of different leaders who may introduce and then lead the service. News and notices, usually about what’s going on in the life of the church will be shared . We have no set format for our services however it will be composed of prayers, worship (singing) bible reading and a sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life.   Once a month we celebrate Holy Communion.

We serve tea, coffee and biscuits when the service finishes. It is a great way to meet people, or simply take time to find your bearings and pray with others. All refreshments are free.

What about my kids?

In parallel with the main service there is "Sprouts" for children which runs from 10.45am to 12 in the rear hall.  There are also "Parade Services" where the Uniformed Organisations take part in the first part of the service and then join in with Sprouts activities for the remaining time.

The kids group activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, bible stories, testimonies, praying, music, craft, drama, fun games and free play. Please pick your children up as soon as the service finishes.

Getting Connected

House Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our small groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, some afternoons and some evenings. Check out House Groups and see if there’s one that you could join, or we can put you in touch with a small group leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to their group.

Prayer Meetings

Our regular prayer meetings are a great opportunity give thanks and talk with God together.  There are opportunities to fellowship and chat before and after the meetings which are both online and in person and at various times of the week.  Please see our Prayer Meetings page for further details.
